		<description>Business / Arts —
power of partnership between business and arts.

Opportunity

Founded in 1974, Business for the Arts plays a critical role in forging partnerships between the arts and business. They recognized the changing landscape with a younger demographic quickly becoming more involved in the arts and saw an opportunity to galvanize its relevance and sustainability in the arts space by becoming the bridge for building intergenerational relationships between its established network, and the new wave of arts audiences and supporters.

Process
Our process began with a critical audit of the Business for the Arts brand and an evaluation whether it was successfully communicating the future of BftA to the diverse audiences it sought. The feedback collected led us to reimagine its existing brand, create a clearer narrative of who they are, and what their values were. Working in collaboration with BftA and its board of directors, Willendorf set out to create a new strategic direction inspired by the symbiotic relationship between arts and business.

Impact

Business for the Arts’ key value is that the arts enriches all things it interacts with including the businesses it partners with. To reflect this belief, the organization adopted a new name, Business / Arts, acknowledging that it’s work is not only for the benefit for the arts, but also for the businesses that champion the arts. The rebrand simplified the name, website, marketing collateral, making the organization much more accessible and relevant to its audiences.

		<description>arts &#38;amp; business exchange — cultivating canada’s future leaders.&#38;nbsp;

Opportunity
Willendorf approached Business / Arts about creating a gathering specifically catering to the younger generation of future arts and business leaders in Canada. The conference would fit in with B/A’s larger strategic vision to align and serve a changing arts landscape that increasingly was getting younger, savvier, and deeply passionate about arts in Canada.

Process

We began by identifying the successes and processes of comparable events in Canada and abroad. Drawing upon this research, Willendorf’s next steps was recruiting steering committee of arts and business leaders in Canada to inform the mission, direction, and define KPIs for the conference. Willendorf in partnership with B/A and the abx steering committee determined the target audience of the conference, and the desired outcomes: to bring together artists, arts administrators, and arts-inclined business professionals between the ages of 25-45, to enhance their knowledge of the sectoral issues, forge strong relationships with peers and next-gen arts leaders, and meet new potential partners from the private sector, share their learnings, projects, challenges and find opportunities for collaboration.

Impact

The full-day event featured many diverse, cross-sectoral, interdisciplinary voices from Indigenous peoples, underserved and underrepresented communities, and many young leaders from multi-disciplinary backgrounds from social media influencers with half a million followers, a digital artist featured in Vogue, festival executives, university professors, and emerging artists. This has become an annual national conference predicated upon the belief that cultivating future leaders through intergenerational conversations could better support Canadian artistic aspirations.ServicesStrategic Visioning and PlanningAudience and Market ResearchCampaign Development and DesignPlace-making: Inclusive Space Design

		<description>
	Mongrel Media—
Canada’s independent film distributor focused on international, independent and art films

Opportunity

Founded in 1994, the company has built a reputation as an innovative and distinct brand with a discerning taste, and creating a home for auteur cinematic voices, with a passion for championing independent filmmakers.

Leading up to the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival the Mongrel and Willendorf teams we’re looking to reimagine the status quo film festival after party. With roughly 15-20 showcased in the festival, Mongrel wanted to find a way to celebrate their films in a way that felt authentic and true to the Mongrel brand: arthouse, diverse, proudly Canadian, and comfortable.

Together, the idea of creating a unified physical space representative of Mongrel’s culture, Mongrel House, was born.

Process

To differentiate itself from the many TIFF related parties, the team decided Mongrel House would occupy one location for the duration of the festival with a celebration honouring the many Mongrel films premiering at TIFF that year, every night of the festival. Remaining in one location presented a unique opportunity to brand the venue, the heritage building Campbell House Museum, inside and out throughout the entire day, allowing it to be a 24h billboard at one of the busiest intersections in Toronto - Queen St. W. and University Avenue.

With the desire to create an experience where Mongrel could welcome international talent to their proudly Canadian “home,” Willendorf was up to tackle the juxtaposing challenges of being local and international, inclusive yet exclusive, creating space and a completely immersive experience.

Impact

What resulted was unlike anything at the Toronto International Film Festival before or after, and has now become a staple destination at the festival. Mongrel House activated all rooms within Campbell House Museum, each with a unique experience or activity from ping pong tables, 3D photo booth, live band karaoke, guided meditation room, or a local-deejay’ed dance floor. The activation spilled out into the outdoor space as well, featuring outdoor art installations, a night food market by the historically renown St. Lawrence Market, several bars, a VR experience, and many more. Willendorf brought together proudly Toronto and international partners like the Holt Renfrew, Grolsch, Cineplex, and Johnny Walker amongst others, and the event attracted pillars of the local Toronto film and arts communities, as well as international industry executives and A-list film stars.

Mongrel House has also been a platform to showcase emerging Canadian and Toronto artists from diverse backgrounds. Mongrel House has positioned itself to create a collective collaboration of business, artists, and media and brings them together to experience a one-of-a-kind evening that is equally exclusive, glamorous, egalitarian, progressive, and invites the world to “our home.”

	Buca&#38;nbsp;—
Toronto’s most authentic Italian kitchen&#38;nbsp;

Opened in 2013, Buca has become a staple in Toronto’s culinary scene. When Co-founders Peter Tsebelis and Gus Giazitzidis opened the first location in 2009, they gutted the big boilers from bottom floor of the Scholastic building and created a hole,&#38;nbsp;buca in italian, and created a simple, rustic, familial Italian escape.
The food menu is designed and printed each afternoon, taking inspiration from seasonal produce and ingredients. The wine menu articulated Master Sommelier Giuseppe Marchesini’s vast knowledge of Italian wines into a poetic journey for Buca’s patrons.

The co-founders of Concorso approached Willendorf ahead of launching their newly formed luxury auto detailing and automotive customization shop. At the time the business still did not have a name, so Willendorf was tasked with helping the co-founders build and define the brand from the very beginning. After conducting stakeholder interviews and market and audience research, Willendorf presented three options for brand directions and names for the business. When the name Concorso was confirmed, Willendorf ideated its brand identity inspired by seeing a racetrack from bird’s eye perspective and created a brand guideline, strategy for their social media, wrote copy for marketing materials, and built a website for the business in preparation for the business’ successful launch in 2019.

The previous brand no longer met The Spoke's core beliefs and messaging, and they wanted to refresh it’s visual identity to better communicate the community and culture it had built, reach a new and emerging audience of creators, independent consultants, digital influencers, and reinvigorate membership and programming, and distinguish itself from new competition in the market.

Process

Willendorf engaged Community Agency, who had a valuable history of working with The Spoke, and offered third-party objective key learnings and perspectives on the new direction on the brand. Through a process of stakeholder interviews, market research, working in partnership with Community to find and create the right graphics, colours, and vision.

Impact

Through thoughtful collaboration, the new branding for The Spoke Club didn't take itself too seriously. It was witty, artful, playful, and an honest breath of fresh air when compared to its market competitors. It positioned The Spoke as accessible despite being a private club, and put the focus on the incredible members it had, rather than appearing to be elusive and hard to access. In addition to the rebrand, Willendorf took over The Spoke’s programming; ideating and producing an average of 12 events per month, creating an unprecendented six month calendar by working&#38;nbsp; alongside its newly developed community partners consisting of TIFF, Canadian Film Centre, Opera Atelier, etc.&#38;nbsp; As a result of the rebrand and thoughtful programming, The Spoke saw an increase in both it’s membership and the general public’s understanding of the club, and its focus in prioritizing and convening Toronto's arts, culture, and media communities.&#38;nbsp;

	L'Institut Idée —
thinking through the unbounded inventiveness of the human mind

Opportunity

To give back to the City of Toronto, L’Institut Idée and The Spoke Club designed a series of events to uncover the key drivers of greatness for the City of Toronto and then bring this new vision to life through word and art.

Process

Our process was inspired by the idea of collective problem solving through a series of design thinking charrettes. A group of Toronto leaders from different walks of life – from architects and urban planners to venture capitalists, artists and corporate leaders – gathered at the Spoke Club for a special half-day session led by L’Institut Idée followed by another half-day session led by Insitute Without Boundaries at the George Brown College. Using the Structural Mapping Process® (SMP), a unique technique for reading the “collective consciousness” around an idea and Collaborative Design, a map to the desired outcome of “Toronto is one of the world’s great cities” was revealed.

ImpactL’Institut Idée, in partnership with the Institute without Boundaries (IwB), continued the process that began in April, 2014, to develop tangible strategies that will enable Toronto to meet its potential and become one of the world’s greatest cities.

The charrette explored the key themes that were revealed through the SMP session. &#38;nbsp;Inspired by the map, city leaders from a variety of disciplines developed ideas, strategies and projects that would bring to life the desired outcome of “Toronto is one of the world’s great cities.”

The key Focus Points were:
1. Openness
2. Organic
3. Originality
4. Nurturing
5. Talent

	Canadian Filmmaker's Party —
a truly Canadian celebration &#38;nbsp;

The Canadian Filmmakers Party was an annual celebration produced by The Spoke Club, hosted the night before the beginning of the Toronto International Film Festival each year. In 2012, there was a shifting focus away from Canadian work and filmmakers onto the excitement of internationally acclaimed stars and premiers taking place during the festival.
Willendorf identified the importance of continuing the event when it was up to be cancelled. Through the relationship it had built with The Spoke Club as well other community friends: eTalk, Mongrel Media, Canadian Screen Awards, Willendorf was able champion the event’s legacy and set out to ensure that space and time was made to celebrate homegrown Canadian talent, before Toronto welcomed the world’s creatives on its doorstep.
As a result of passionate work, the team was able to produce a the most impactful edition of th Canadian Filmmakers Party, bringing on new sponsors, reimagining the approach to the event to make it more inclusive, experiential, and reinvigorating the community’s dedication to celebrating Canadian talent first. Hosted by Canadian filmmakers Deepa Mehta and the late Rob Stewart.

Since the 2012 event, the Canadian Filmmakers Party has become a staple stop for industry and talent, and inspired several similar events during the Toronto International Film Festival.
